Funding More and Better Trails

Chapter Trail Grant

Zach Walbridge

Supporting More & Better Trails Since 2013

Over 90% of membership dollars ultimately flow through to our Chapters through shared resources, administrative services, and grants. Membership revenue is focused on maintaining what we have and keeping pace with the wear and tear from those who regular enjoy our existing trail systems.

In contrast, the Chapter Trail Grant Program was launched in 2013 to help fund new trails, major upgrades and rehabilitation, and equipment for Chapters to significantly enhance the networks they manage (and in some cases, create new ones altogether). Thanks to the generosity of Steven Fischer,

Chapters submit applications each year for shovel ready, permitted projects and the Trails Committee, comprised of two board members and two members at large, determines the awards. Through the generosity of Steven R. Fischer, $6,000 in awards were made to four Chapters that first year. Since then, more than 120 grants have been made to 27 Chapters, with more than $530,00 ultimately going towards improving the quality and quantity of riding in Vermont. The trail riding experience here has come a long way in the last 12 years, and we believe the Chapter Trail Grant Program has played a major role in that evolution.

Chapters submit applications during one of two windows – spring and fall – and funding decisions are made by a committee of Chapter representatives. This unique model of peer review and assessment has proven incredibly effective, and elevated both the grant writing and trail building capabilities of all our Chapters.
