Trail Building and Advocacy

VMBA has a competent volunteer staff to meet with Chapters, government officials and private landowners to promote mountain bike trails. VMBA is a legitimate organization with insurance coverage for landowners who host trails and we maintain cooperative legal agreements with municipalities, the State of Vermont and the National Forest system. We also provide trail building consultation and related literature for local groups interested in repairing, establishing or maintaining trails.

The first step in the trail-building process is to establish a relationship with the landowner or land manger. We reject the idea of building a trail and even riding an existing trail without landowner or land manger permission.

The land manager should understand that VMBA is a responsible organization similar to the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST). Explain and pictorially represent want the exact intentions are for the trail, the land involved and be sure to remind the land manager that VMBA has the knowledge and ability to create a trail that is erosion and liability free.
